Where in the school can you find mathematicians, scientists, anthropologists, poets, potters, and painters? In the art room, of course! From grade 1 through 5, our elementary art program progresses sequentially through its own curriculum and naturally becomes part of the inter-disciplinary process. Looking at art and artifacts helps enhance our knowledge of history through insight into ideas and cultures of the past. Science, math, and technology also become part of the process of making art. Language skills improve as students use art terminology and description to respond orally and in written form to their own work, and the work of others.
The Middle School Program
Creativity and original ideas are stressed in middle school visual arts, while students are also required to demonstrate an understanding of concepts and techniques. Students further develop their knowledge of art elements by experimenting with a variety of mediums.
A component of our program is to help adolescents immersed in popular culture decipher the real and subliminal visual clues that are omnipresent, and make appropriate choices based on clearer understanding.
All students participate and achieve success at their own level. This challenge of diverse levels and learning styles is accommodated by the flexibility and expertise of our certified art educators.
As per New York State Education Regulations, all students take art for two semesters over their three years at
The High School Program
Electives include traditional studio classes such as drawing and painting, water color and figure drawing; ceramics and sculpture; darkroom photography; a range of media based classes including computer graphics, digital photography, computer aided design; as well as advanced design courses culminating in a full year elective in architecture. Many students take one or more Advanced Placement courses in Drawing, 2-D Design, 3-D Design, or Art History.
Our students receive many accolades, are accepted to top art schools and programs, earn scholarships, and achieve prominence in their field.
