Twitter at Ogden

Dear Parents,

As promised in my summer newsletter, Ogden has been thinking of creative ways to begin showcasing what makes this school such a special place. As part of the 2015-16 parent survey, one of the items that surfaced was that all parents, regardless of their working status wanted to be a part of what transpires in our building. In an effort to make Ogden an “open-door school” (Henderson, Mapp, Johnson, and Davies, 2007) and create transparency, we are beginning to use Twitter as a storytelling tool. The District currently has great ways to keep the community involved, such as individual school Websites and Facebook; however, Ogden’s Twitter account would keep parents apprised about what is happening inside the building as it occurs.

Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140-character messages called "tweets". It is my hope that Twitter helps parents change their dinnertime conversations FROM

Parent: What did you do in school today, John?

Child: Nothing

TO...

Parent: John, I saw on Twitter today that the high school students visited to teach you about Constitution Day. Look at these great photos!

Child: It was such an awesome day, mom! Look at my friend giving a high five to the bulldog mascot!

I have put some thoughtful safety measures into place by customizing our security settings, such as not allowing others to “tag” our photos. In addition, student names or other identifiable information will never be mentioned in any tweets. Tweet location will not be displayed. Direct messaging is also disabled which means I will not be able to receive messages from any random Twitter user.

If you don’t already have a Twitter account, I encourage you to create one and begin following Ogden. Our handle name is @OgdenElementary. If you place this in the search bar, you will find us. In addition, we have created the following hashtags: #HWOgden, #HWOESPride. These hashtags allow all teachers who post a photo to sew the pages of the Ogden story together so that you can see all of our happenings in one place. In addition, if you attend a school event and would like to contribute to our story you can add either hashtag to your tweet and become a storyteller alongside us!

There may be days when many photos are tweeted out and other days when few, if any, are tweeted. I will do my best to capture events each day as will other staff members in the building. Remember, the purpose of Twitter is to help you gain a glimpse into the daily happenings of the building, not take everyone away from their important work of educating and keeping your child safe. In addition, we welcome your positive comments, but will not be able to respond to them since that would be very time consuming with 800 parents in our building!

If you would like more information, you can view the following YouTube Video.

Please note that the video is 29 minutes long; however, it is very comprehensive. You can also visit You Tube and type Twitter in the search bar for alternate options.

I look forward to tweeting with you in the near future. We hope that this tool helps to make you know you are a valued member of the Ogden School Community. Rest assured that this is just the beginning of our story and I cannot wait to continue to write the pages alongside you and your family.

Tweet away!

Dr. Anzalone
